Nerve Conduction Velocity Test (NCV)

Nerve Conduction Velocity Test (NCV) procedures are as follows:

  • First electrode placement: Recording electrodes will be taped on your skin (a gel may be applied first). The recording electrodes will detect the electrical signal after the impulse has traveled along the nerve.
  • Second electrode placement: A stimulating electrode is held against your skin. This is an electrode that sends a small electrical charge along the nerve.
  • Pulse stimulation: An electrical impulse is sent through the nerves. You may feel a tingle or your muscles might twitch, but this tiny shock is not harmful.
  • Recording: The time between stimulation and response will be recorded to determine how quickly and thoroughly the impulse is sent. Each test will just take a few minutes.
  • After the exam: The electrodes are removed. Your skin will be cleaned, and you can go home.
