Why is EMG and NCV Done?

  • To discover the cause of muscle weakness spasms, paralysis, or pain in the arms, hands, legs or face.
  • To determine if disease is involved in the spinal cord, nerves, muscles or the nerve-muscle junction.
  • These tests can help your doctor make a diagnosis. The problem that's causing your symptoms can be identified and other problems may be ruled out.
  • Once a specific diagnosis is made, treatment and therapy can begin promptly.

Signs of muscle weakness include:

difficulty walking, dressing, getting up from a chair, clumsiness when writing or fastening something, etc.

Some of the conditions detected by EMG are:

pinched nerves and inflamed muscles, due to an injury, a ruptured disk, disease or other conditions.
