Neurofeedback involves the placement of wire sensors on the individual's head to measure the electrical activity of the brain. Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback where individuals are trained to improve the functioning of their brain. Neurofeedback integrates clinical expertise with the best available research to address behavioral, cognitive, and subjective functions related to brain activity. It is a safe, noninvasive way to achieve long lasting effects and does not involve medication or surgery. Neurofeedback has its foundation in basic and applied neuroscience and is approved by the American Psychological Association as an evidence-based intervention.
Neurofeedback is used in the treatment of the following conditions:
- Sleep Disturbances such as Insomnia
- Cognitive Decline
- Memory Loss
Biofeedback is a form of training in which you use instruments to measure body functions that are not normally in your conscious awareness. Then you are taught how to teach yourself ways to change or control this physiology with goals of improved function.
At Chesapeake Neurology Associates, we have found that many of the disorders we treat (insomnia, migraines, chronic pain, anxiety and others) are directly influenced by the acute stress reaction. This stress reaction is mediated by the adrenaline response in the body. The biofeedback technique offers a direct insight into how your body responds to stress and how you can learn to control that response. Self-awareness and self-control usually results in dramatic improvements in these conditions.
